What is a humanoid robot and what can it do today
A humanoid robot is a machine shaped like a person: a torso, two arms, two legs and a head. The idea is that it can work in spaces built for people (stairs, doors, tables, tools) without changing those spaces.
What makes a robot humanoid
- It moves on two legs and keeps its balance.
- It has arms, sometimes with fingers, to grasp objects.
- It has sensors: cameras, sometimes lidar, balance and touch sensors.
- It is controlled by a program or an AI model.
What they are used for today
Most humanoids sold openly are meant for:
- research and laboratories;
- teaching students and educators;
- demos at trade shows and events;
- pilot projects at companies.
What they still cannot do reliably
Online videos show the best moments. In real conditions there are limits:
- Household work: cooking, cleaning and tidying are not reliable without supervision.
- Battery: often only a few hours.
- Safety: around people the robot must be controlled.
- Cost and maintenance: accessible models cost from a few thousand to tens of thousands of euros.
What comes next
Prices are falling and the technology is improving quickly, but we do not know when robots will become mainstream. We follow the field and will publish comparisons of specific models.
